Two high school buddies, Derek Chung and
Tony Kalanj own the Marine Pub in Burnaby, BC. Tony, a former
accountant from Vancouver needed a change, so back in the
80's he started a small pub. He was having so much fun that
Derek, a CBC employee, quit and they decided to open the
Marine Pub 20 years ago.
Tony and Derek had to wade through legislation to open
their dream business but they persisted. They chose a location
on the fringes of an industrial and residential area. They
bought the land where a defunct lumber mill was and convinced
the authorities that their business was viable. After two
long years, the Marine Pub was built and it has developed
quite a following in the community. Tony believes he has
the key. "We listen to what people want."
